Maia Lee (born January 31, 1983) was a finalist in the popular talent contest Singapore Idol. Known for her high-energy performances, she was a controversial figure with her "bad girl" image.
Maia has eleven tattoos covering her petite frame (she stands at 1.48 meters), and recently, she has had an image of an eagle tattooed on her neck, which symbolizes her Chinese name, "Ying". Maia also has a four year-old son, Tyrese Lee.
Given nicknames such as "Rock Chick", "Hot Babe" and "Sexy Momma", she graced the May 2005 cover of the popular male lifestyle magazine FHM. Quite well known for her buxom figure, Maia was voted #8 on FHM Singapore's World's Most Sexiest Women list, and awarded the FHM Most Outspoken Babe 2005 award.
Maia recently performed her new hits "Bu Hui Wang Ji" (Never Forget) and "Zhi Guai Wo" (Blame Myself), at the annual President's Star Charity - "ZPOP zbNow" concert organised by the local newspaper Lian He Zao Bao. Maia sent the 10,000-strong crowd wild with her showmanship.
Maia is part of the local techno trio, The Usual Suspects, who have three #1 hits on local station WKRZ 91.3 FM, namely "China Girl", "The Love You Promised", and "Sunburn". "The Love You Promised" has also been released in Japan and Europe, receiving airplay in countries as far as Scandinavia. Famed German dance music prodigy, Cascada ('Miracle', 'Bad Boy'), even picked the song up and did a remix released in December 2004.
As an artist signed with EQ Music, Maia's debut English solo album, titled Maia - Emotionally Advised - released on 20 August 2005 - showcases 3 songs in Mandarin, on top of 10 English tracks. With song titles like "I Don't Need You" and "Scum", Maia has once again live up to her rebel-attitude image. Since May 2005, Maia has also became a celebrity guest interviewer/writer for The New Paper, a local afternoon newspaper. With fortnightly 2-page spread articles and occasional Sunday columns in which she writes away from the normal celebrity interviews, Maia impressed the nation with her strong, rhetoric language and contents. She had quit secondary school at the age of 15, making a choice to learn through backpacking instead of sitting in front of 'the dead-beat' syllabuses.
For a year, the then 15-year-old feisty teen went solo backpacking to countries like Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, immersing herself in local culture, gaining life experiences. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why Maia sticks out like a white rose among the red - she comes across as an in-your-face Asian.
In December 2005, Maia snagged the title of "Shock Of The Year" in The New Paper's annual Flame Awards - for her near-marriage to fellow Singapore Idol finalist, Sim.
Due to her infamous straightforwardness, Maia has garnered scores of fans and detractors alike in her year-old professional career; taking her to places as far as Dubai, Thailand and Malaysia.
