Biography
During her high school years in Hawaii, she formed a singing group with some friends and performed at small restaurants in Waikiki. Makoto, a musical acquaintance of producer Tsunku, saw them perform and convinced his former bandmate to sign them into his growing Hello! Project empire. Mika and her group headed to Japan in 1999 and became Coconuts Musume.
The group had some success and released a few singles. While working in Coconuts, Mika was soon drafted into a newly formed group called "Minimoni", which brought her more popularity. When founding member Yaguchi Mari left the group, Mika became the new leader.
Coconuts Musume singles were few and far between as members came and went, but she was working in Minimoni, participated in a few shuffle groups, and also co-hosted a radio show with fellow Coconuts members Kimura Ayaka and Lehua Sandbo (later just Ayaka), called KISS THE COCONUTS! from 2001 to 2004.
Early in 2004, Mika announced that she would be leaving Coconuts Musume (which only consisted of her and Ayaka at that point) as well as Minimoni to pursue her dream of making it in the United States. On May 2, 2004, she gave her final performance as part of Minimoni in Saitama, Japan for her graduation. Later that month on the 29th, she performed solo for the last time in Japan. On May 31, 2004, she left Japan to begin studying music in Los Angeles, California.
